General information

Atrovent belongs to the class of medications called bronchodilators. It is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which includes bronchitis and emphysema). It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up and you can breathe more easily.

Directions

Take Atrovent exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended starting dose for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, is two inhalations of Atrovent four times a day. You should not take more than 12 inhalations of Atrovent in 24 hours. It should be inhaled into the lungs, not sprayed onto the back of the throat and swallowed. When using the inhaler device for the first time, prime it by spraying 2 test sprays into the air, away from your face. Also prime the inhaler if you have not used it for 3 days or longer. Avoid getting this medication into your eyes. It may cause eye pain/irritation, temporary blurred vision, and other vision changes. Rinse your mouth after using the inhaler to prevent dry mouth and throat irritation.

Precautions

Before taking Atrovent you should talk with your doctor if you have enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), glaucoma, bladder problem, any allergies. Avoid getting this medication in your eyes. If this happens, rinse with water. This drug may make you dizzy or cause blurred vision or other vision changes. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages.

Contraindications

You should not use Atrovent if you are allergic to ipratropium or to any of the ingredients of the medication, to atropine. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It should not be used by a child younger than 12 years of age.

Possible side effect

Get emergency medical help if you have headache, dizziness, hives, difficulty breathing, fast heartbeat, unpleasant taste, nervousness, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, nausea, upset stomach, dry mouth, cough, hoarseness, blurred vision, severe eye pain, difficult or painful urination. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: atropine, belladonna, clidinium, dicyclomine, glycopyrrolate, hyoscyamine, mepenzolate, methantheline, methscopolamine, propantheline, scopolamine, theophylline. Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdose

The overdose symptoms are unknown. If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once.

Storage

Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
